Over the years, Johnny Depp has continually choosen very eclectic movies. “The Ninth Gate” is no exception. I guess you would classify this movie as a “horror” film, but I did not think it was very scary. In fact, I watched this movie by myself around midnight. And, if you read my review for “The Blair Witch Project”, you can assume how I feel about the late night horror movie.
I enjoy the fact that “Johnny Depp” can almost be used as a movie genre. After watching several of his movies, you pretty much know what you can expect from his films. And, when looking for a movie at the video store, you have in the back of your mind if you are up for a “Johnny Depp” film. I don’t know of any other actor that can claim this – except actors like Segal and Schwarzenegger, but all of their movies have basically the same plot.
So, I guess today I was in the mood for a “Johnny Depp” film. The movie held my interest for a while, but it started to dwindle and I found myself periodically checking the counter on the VCR. This may have been because I was watching it late at night or because the running time was more than 2 hours.
I think the best way I could describe this movie is lengthy and unfulfilling. I did not have a strong urge to turn it off, but I was more than ready for it to end. I think Johnny Depp fans will enjoy it. But, if you have not liked his other work, this is not going to change your mind. |
