When determining the quality of the movie, I found that it was hard to separate the sequel from the original and rate the movie as a standalone film. But, as a movie watcher I think I have every right to make the comparison. For one reason, I don’t think “Hannibal” would be able to survive on its own merits.
In my opinion, this movie should never have been made. All it really does is take some of the magic away from the original. “The Silence of the Lambs” was such a spectacular movie that it would be almost impossible to make a sequel that could stand up to it. That’s not to say that wonderful sequels cannot be made. Just look at the first three “Star Wars” movies. But even there, they did not know when to stop.
The only positive thing I can say about this movie is that Julianne Moore (Clarice Starling) did a good job of filling the shoes originally worn by Jodie Foster. However, I spent most of the movie picturing what the film would have been like if Jodie Foster had taken the role. To me, anyone other than her would have been a let down.
If you like “The Silence of the Lambs”, you almost have to watch this movie. But, I suspect that you will also lose some appreciation for the original. |
