You just never know what you’re gonna get when you rent a Sci-fi. I knew from the trailers that the special effects were probably going to impress me and that’s about all. I was pleasantly surprised to get a good character introduction in the beginning which helped me later to understand where the writer wanted this movie to go. I was definitely shocked to see what they found on Mars. It’s hard to explain without giving the movie away but I’ll say that until the end, they had me thinking this was a horror flick. I also should say –for the record – that I cringed at the presentation that was made in the end regarding humanity. If you were at ease watching “Contact” then it won’t bother you a bit.
This movie had some big stars in the cast. I think Gary Sinise is at home in space movies and he delivered according to my expectations. The characters kept the level of suspense up even as they portrayed men and women who are trained to methodically handle scrupulous situations in an environment where the smallest event can drastically change the outcome of a situation. I found myself wondering if I could handle the stress that they were confronted with. I am personally always impressed with the engineering and skill that goes into space operations – real or not.
Because of the special effects in this movie, I would highly recommend it to anyone who owns a home theater. This is a great example of technology in movies. The intricate shots of space vehicles and Martian terrain were breathtaking (especially for a techno-geek like me). Also, for those that actually pay attention to movie scores, I think you’ll be intrigued by the music in this movie. I was actually more stressed at points of tension because the music was so calm! I think the composer was trying to show how precise the thinking has to be when trouble occurs in space – very cool touch. |
