Almost Famous was excellent. This story of a 15 year old writer given an assignment to interview a rock band for Rolling Stone magazine had many very interesting facets. First of all, the characters were developed quite well from the start. The boy’s discovery of rock music was clearly a turning point in his young life. It was great to see him get interested in the music to the point that he wanted very much to be in that lifestyle. He got his wish and we got to go with him on a tour with a 1973 rock band!
The story took the boy into manhood as he learned life on the road – meeting women, being surrounded by drugs and alcohol, and partying with rock stars. There were several underlying themes which gave the film a deep richness. The writer made statements about music, love courage, and life in the 70s.
Humor was weaved throughout the entire screenplay. In fact, that is what attracted me to the movie from the trailer. Without a doubt, my favorite scene was in the airplane. I can’t say more without giving things away, but I was laughing out loud for sure.
This movie was very entertaining and had a wholesome storyline. I will say that it’s not for kids (in my opinion) due to the scenes with drugs, some harsh language, and brief nudity. What else would you expect from a movie set in the 70s rock n roll era? By the way, this film won an Oscar last night for Best Original Screenplay – it deserved it. |
