| Seeing this movie was a truly unique experience for me, one that I haven't been able to fully grasp or understand its impact on me. I reserve this rating echelon for movies that have succeeded in involving me emotionally in some way. Until now, my ratings of "8" or above have been tagged for movies that elicited purely physical responses, whether it be laughter, fear, sympathy, melancholy, etc. As I am writing this, I am now beginning to realize exactly how this movie involved me in an emotional sense - appreciation and admiration for the movie's direction, editing, and post-production. Admittedly, I have never viewed (or reviewed) a movie based on these factors, but I felt that the presentation of the effects substantially enhanced and supported the plot. For me, camera tricks usually detract from the plot. In addition, quality performances from both the main and the supporting cast cannot be ignored. Don't be surprised if Johnny Depp (George Jung) is nominated for "Best Actor" at the 2002 Academy Awards. |
