Jason Biggs plays Paul Tannek, a lovably pathetic, small town "nice guy" who enters a New York City college. His hip, cosmopolitan roommates see him as an overall misfit that they can easily ridicule, manipulate, and exploit. The culture shock and unfriendly atmosphere almost prove to be too much for young Tannek. He does befriend and eventually fall for Dora Diamond (Mena Suvari), but she is otherwise involved with the evil, soulless, Professor Alcott (Greg Kinnear). Eventually, she realizes that Professor Alcott is an egocentric jerk and that she really wants to be with the caring, sensitive Tannek. Wait a minute, the chick ends up with the nice guy! Maybe there is some hope for me after all!!
(INTERNALLY PROCESSING REALITY CHECK)
I almost forgot, this is just a movie.
Biggs performance is very credible for the material he had to work with. Probably the best feature of the movie is its soundtrack. It almost seemed like the driving force behind the movie was to provide a vehicle for the music - the movie itself was secondary.
As a sidebar comment, there is a scene in the movie where one of the roommates is getting a manicure from a beautiful, exotic, brunette. Her twenty seconds of fame added a kernel to my overall rating.
