The cynic in me thinks the studios released "Blow" at this time to capitalize on the public's interest in the nationÕs drug culture (thanks to "Traffic"), but the two movies couldn't be more different. Whereas "Traffic" seems like a documentary set in the present, with multiple parallel plotlines, "Blow" tells the story of an everyday guy who played a key role in the cocaine boom of the 70's.
Johnny Depp portrays George Jung and narrates (similar to Ray Liotta in ŌGood FellasĶ) in this entertaining movie about the rise and fall of a self-made milloinaire (albeit from drug smuggelling, but itÕs hard not to like the guy!). There are a few interesting parallels between JungÕs family experiences growing up in Massechusetts and his own experiences as a husband and father later in life. And supporting roles by Paul Reubens and Ray Liotta add some humor and depth to an otherwise average cast. I know my fellow reviewers felt the movie was too long, but I didnÕt seem to notice the length, as I was hooked into this manÕs story from the beginning.
Much of this youÕve seen in other movies in this genre, but itÕs always fun to see how Depp will develop a character. HeÕs one of the few actors I know that would seem to have a primarily female following, but still chooses quirky and unconvential roles that appeal to men as well. HeÕll always be cool in my book, and IÕd recommend this movie for that reason alone. |
