Ever since seeing ÒThe Silence of the LambsÓ, my friends who actually read (can you believe it?) told me that Hollywood would never be able to make the sequel. The follow-up book, ÒHannibalÓ, was far too twisted and violent. After seeing this movie, I wished they hadnÕt tried.
Everything I enjoyed about ÒThe Silence of the LambsÓ, this movie lacked, including the intrigue of a federal criminal investigation, the heart-pounding suspense, and the psychological drama. This movie only delivered on the promise of stomach-turning gore.
However, there were some bright spots. The special effects, if youÕre into that sort of thing, were sickeningly realistic. Props to the make-up team, who made every slash and slice look absolutely frightening! Also, as you would expect, Sir Anthony Hopkins is excellent as the ever-charming Dr. Lecter. His eyes alone will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. And despite some big shoes to fill, Julianne Moore delivers a solid performance as Agent Clarice Starling (last portrayed by Jodie Foster). Because of the phenomenal job Jodie Foster did with the character in ÒThe SilenceÉÓ, I thought it would be difficult for her to pull it off, but I canÕt think of one time during the movie that I noticed a new actress portraying in this familiar character. Great job.
But these few highlights werenÕt enough for me to consider ÒHannibalÓ any better than the rest of HollywoodÕs painfully average offerings. My recommendation would be to stick with the book version on this one. |
