As a comedy, it does not succeed because the vulgarity and sophomoric gags seem to strangely interfere with the romantic story. Bridget's self-loathing is not lovably cute in a humorous or even ironic way; it's pathetic and hard to watch. Sharing her life is like watching a train wreck.
The only enjoyable scene for me was the "duel" between her love interests, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). No, pistols or swords were not drawn at dawn in the name of honor. Just an awkward, realistic street brawl between two men who obviously wouldn't know how to fight.
