James Cameron captured the panic and desperation of this tragedy remarkably. I actually caught myself holding my breath as if I was on the Titanic and my life was hanging in the balance. I didn't really dig the relationship between Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWit Bukater (Kate Winslet), but I suppose it was a means to an end - albeit a long, overdeveloped means to an end.
The filmaking is brilliant and breathtaking-especially the seamless transitions from the past to the present and vice versa. I was especially moved by the ending when Jack and Rose are reunited for eternity.
On the whole, it is a movie that I could see numerous times, but probably not more than once a year. For me, that's pretty good for a movie that didn't make my best movies list. Leo's acting opposite Winslet at the beginning of the film appears awkward. This could be intentional since they have opposite social standing, but it appeared to me as if they didn't have screen chemistry. If I believed that the chemistry was there, it would have secured a place on my best movies list. |
