My Review: |
 |
This is, truly, one of the greatest movies that has ever been made. Poetry. Passion. Romance. Love. Humor. Action. Drama. Intrigue. Jealousy. Charity. Awe. I'm probably missing a few more.
The framework of this movie is to plumb the depths of the genius that is William Shakespeare and discover the Genesis of his tragic masterpiece, "Romeo and Juliet." Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is not portrayed as a cerebral, larger-than-life bard who regurgitates his poetry and prose as if he was taking dictation from divine inspiration. He is depicted as an extremely talented artist who seeks human inspiration as his muse.
The acting performances are very strong-especially from the supporting cast. The period costumes and other details that transfroms an audience to the setting of 16th Century London are breathtaking and wonderful. The story is inventive and clever. As an amateurish writer (who happens to have a pretty good command of language in his own right), I am not only humbled by Shakespeare's enduring works, but I am also humbled by the masterful script of "Shakespeare in Love." |
