I must have lived a sheltered childhood, because “Atlantis” was the first full length Disney cartoon that I have ever watched in the theatre. And, I’m not exactly sure why. Anyway, it was an enjoyable first selection for the big screen.
The characters were entertaining and I had fun trying to determine the actor that went with each of their voices. My favorite thing had to be that the characters never broke into song, unlike most Disney movies that seem to turn into a musical at some point. I'm sure kids love the singing and dancing, but it usually drives me crazy.
The movie was rated PG and the theatre was filled with young children, as you would expect. However, there are a few violent scenes and some creepy special effects. I point this out, because I noticed the rambunctious children getting quiet in a hurry when one of the characters was crystallized. I’m not sure if they were just absorbed in the movie, or if the effects were a little too scary. It made me think back to my childhood, and how much I loved watching “Speed Racer”. Except for the one episode where Speed had a nightmare and saw a disfigured version of himself. That scene haunted me for a long time, and every time the episode aired I would leave the room or turn it off before the dream occurred. – Don’t get me wrong. “Atlantis” was nothing compared to that, but I think it is important to point out since children will be dragging their parents to see it.
I liked it and I look forward to watching more Disney movies in the theatre. |
