Brando, De Niro, and yes, Norton - all three give quality (but not spectacular) performances. For me, these are the only indisputable positives of the movie. De Niro and Norton take you on a somewhat interesting journey into planning every excruciating detail of the crime of the century. I would suspect that crimes of the century do take an inordinate amount of meticulous planning, but the movie's overall suspense suffers because the protracted portrayal provides only a modicum of intrigue.
However, my greatest complaint is the mysterious disappearance of Angela Bassett (Diane). What does her character REALLY contribute (he asked rhetorically)? Her character is never developed - an afterthought - let alone her relationship with De Niro, which is the only reason that she's there to begin with. Poorly conceptualized and nothing realized. |
