Despite a great premise and a top notch cast, this movie is only "funny" when it should be "great".
Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie alot! I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at the movie promotion business, and to what lengths a studio will go to ensure favorable ratings. As always, Billy Crystal guarantees laughs, and Julia Roberts is cute, charming and funny at the same time. What I particularly enjoyed was the love/hate relationship between the "Sweethearts", Gwen Harrison (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Eddie Thomas (John Cusack). I thought both characters were well written and very funny. Honorable mention should go to Hank Azaria for his role as Gwen's jealous, latin, and english-challenged boyfriend Hector (somewhat revisiting the role he played in "The Birdcage").
But overall, the movie wasn't all that memorable, and although I laughed a good bit, I really can't bring myself to give it more than 6 kernels. I guarantee you'll laugh during "America's Sweethearts", but I'd recommend this as a good "date-renter", if you know what I mean. |
