If you happened to miss the first movie, consider yourself fortunate because everything in this movie will appear to be new and fresh - as fresh as breaking the seal on the toilet in some of your finer hotels. Even the less gifted who witnessed the first American Pie will erroneously think that everything in the sequel is new and fresh. But please humor me by considering the following memorable scenes from American Pie:
1. Drinking beer with a little "sour" mixed in ... yep, it's in the sequel.
2. Jim (Jason Biggs) discovers a new way to enjoy apple pie ... yep, it's in the sequel.
3. Jim and Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) become amateur internet stars ... yep, it's in the sequel.
Granted, these scenes have been re-packaged to ineffectually create the illusion of "new" for the less gifted, but anyone with creativity and imagination will see through the transparency. If you combine this with the amount of time that was invested into remembering those great times in high school (the first movie), you'll be greatly disappointed in the effort to capitalize on the prior success.
American Pie was your typical sophomoric romp, complete with shallow superficiality. In comparison with other movies of this type, it's better than some but certainly not as good as others. American Pie 2, however, is arguably better than most sophomoric sequels. I will say that it had one aspect that I could appreciate more than the first movie: a couple of attempts were made to peel away the thinnest surface layer of several characters to actually develop them beyond the superficial. |
