This movie was wonderfully done. It was haunting, dark and dreary. It was everything that it was meant to be - including gory.
Johnny Depp was, as I expected, superb in his role as the Inspector. I enjoy just about everything he's in. However, even though the film was very well done - and the story was very well written - I came out of the movie with a sick, nauseated feeling. I'm sure that was also the idea that the Hughes Brothers wanted to come across. They wanted you to know the story of Jack the Ripper, and it's not a pleasant one to be told.
More than once I had to turn away from the screen (ala Hannibal - however, this was much better than that!) But the story sucked me in. I had to give this movie a "7", even though I didn't "enjoy" it. How can you enjoy brutal murder? Of course, I expect no less of Johnny Depp to be in a film this disturbing - and mind you - it is VERY disturbing. If you have a weak stomach, like myself - go prepared. Do not eat a big meal beforehand! Actually - this movie is great for dieters. I definitely lost my appetite in this one! |
