People always give me a hard time for rating "Coyote Ugly" an 8. In fact, some of my friends have joked that they can no longer put any faith in my movie reviews. Although I truly enjoyed "Coyote Ugly", I would be willing to agree that my enjoyment was due in large part to my infatuation with Piper Perabo. Much like the story told in “America’s Sweethearts”, I think the movie going audience enjoys getting caught up in the on-screen personalities of the actors. Then, if we like what we see, we can translate this personality into their off-screen life (however, I’m sure this truly is the case with Piper : ).
The role of Gwen Harrison (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) was obviously intended to be a character that you just don’t like. The movie definitely succeeded in getting me not to like her, yet they may have succeeded a little too well because I didn’t even enjoy watching her. This, combined with her idiot boyfriend Hector, definitely took away from my overall delight. On the positive side, I did find the characters portrayed by Julia Robert, John Cusack, and Billy Crystal to be relatively entertaining.
When it comes to renting movies, we (PopcornPicks reviewers) are just like everyone else. What I mean is that we like to know the opinions of others when we try to decide what movie to see. For “America’s Sweethearts”, I knew Jill (my fellow PopcornPicks reviewer) loved it, so I wanted to give it a try. Plus, I recently saw "Serendipity" (another romantic John Cusack movie) and thought it was wonderful. Based on these factors, I was hoping I would like “America’s Sweethearts” a little more than I did. But, in the end, I guess I got what I was truly expecting – a merely average romantic comedy. |
