It's doubtful that there can be any middle ground with this movie-you're either going to love it or hate depending on your understanding or appreciation of British humor. First and foremost, Monty Python is a satirical troupe that relies on exaggeration for effect. If you keep yourself from trying to figure out why they're doing something and focus on what they're actually doing, you're halfway there.
This movie really consists of a series of short scenes from birth to death. Along the way, they spoof religion, the military, corporate culture, and many other aspects of life in this world. The politically-correct gestapo would be apoplectic upon seeing this movie, but that's a HEALTHY thing. This world needs to re-learn how to laugh at itself. Even if you end up loathing this movie, you will undoubtedly find at least one thing laughable-hopefully much more.
As revealed at the end of the movie, the true meaning of life boils down to this (don't worry, I'm not revealing anything in the movie or something you don't already know):
Try and be nice to people...Avoid eating fat...Read a good book every now and then...Get some walking in...And try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. |
