Overall, I enjoyed this movie. It must have been a fascinating book to read, based on the number of characters and the scale of the story. I wish I had that vivid of an imagination! However, in trying to capture all that detail, the movie seems somewhat long as you’re sitting there.
The acting seemed OK, which for me means that no performances stood out, good or otherwise. It was interesting to see the mixed cast, some you’ll recognize (Liv Tyler and the guy from “The Matrix” as elves) and some new faces as well. The same goes for the special effects, average at best, but maybe we’re all just getting too spoiled. I should re-watch “Star Wars” to get some perspective.
Based on the level of violence, I would not call this a kid’s movie. If you have small children, take them to see “Harry Potter” while it’s still in the theatres, or rent the original animated version of “The Hobbit”. |
