In the recent edition of Entertainment Weekly magazine, “The Critics’ Choices” for best screenplay of the year included several votes for "Memento" and several for “Gosford Park”. I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could say that “Gosford Park” is a better movie than "Memento", and do so with a straight face. I have one simple question, at least it seems like a simple question. What on earth do people look for in a movie? From the high ratings given to “Gosford Park”, I’m starting to think that it’s not entertainment. I say this because it took all my strength just to stay awake. I think you first need to be entertained, and then (and only then) can you look at the other things that go into a quality movie like acting, directing, etc.
All that's left to say is that this is the second critically acclaimed movie in a row that I didn’t like ("A Beautiful Mind" is the other). See it if you want, but I challenge you to enjoy it. Despite Matt saying that “persons of compromised concentration will loathe this film”, there are those of us with an adequate concentrating ability that also feel the same way. |
