I think they overkilled the "bad guys double-crossing the other bad guys" concept. Joe Moore (Gene Hackman) and his team successfully rob a jewelry store for Bergman (Danny DeVito), but Bergman never pays (DOUBLE-CROSS 1) because all his money was leveraged for his schemes. Somehow, Moore agrees to pull-off an even bigger score for Bergman. Knowing that he'll be screwed again, Moore plans to have Bergman think he has the loot but keeps the booty for himself (DOUBLE-CROSS 2). When Bergman realizes he's been screwed, he comes back to collect. Once again, Bergman thinks he's got the goods, but Moore is one step ahead with the treasure (DOUBLE-CROSS 3). Then, Bergman's nephew (Sam Rockwell) returns ... you get the idea (DOUBLE-CROSS 4).
My impression is that the writers tried to manufacture surprising surprises, but this recycling melodrama became tiresome, and eventually, ridiculous. |
