The production notes claim that this movie does not represent any specific conflict or time period. TOUT AU CONTRAIRE! Bosnia? Pilot shot down "Behind Enemy Lines?" The framework of the story sounds uncreatively similar to the real life heroics of Lt. Scott O'Grady. Here's the subtle difference: BEL involves a Navy pilot; Lt. O'Grady was an Air Force pilot.
I sat through most of the movie feeling lukewarm. I somehow disregarded the stereotypical characters: a brash, cocky golden-boy pilot (Owen Wilson) with his seasoned, tough, cantankerous commanding officer (Gene Hackman). I mused to myself that this was "Top Gun 2."
And then...the daring rescue!! I wouldn't be so callous as to actually reveal the success of the rescue. I just found it ridiculously improbable that a zillion rounds of ammunition at a range of less than 100 yards could not hit the intended target, regardless of whether he was moving or not. |
