Nicole Kidman, Entertainment Weekly’s pick for entertainer of the Year for 2001, starts off 2002 in low-key fashion with the staring role in “Birthday Girl”. A film which, although moderately entertaining, may not have the pizzazz to draw people to the theatre.
I thought Nicole (Nadia) was a perfect selection since the story called for a character that is both sexy and seductive. Two qualities which she exudes quite well - and two qualities that make men go out of their minds and lose their rational thinking. I also thought Ben Chaplin (John Buckingham) did a good job as the man who falls in love with the exotic beauty.
The movie progressed at a nice pace and always held my attention. Although it had an hour and a half running time, I thought it felt like a short movie. I guess that just means I was entertained and caught up in the movie while losing all track of time. But, isn’t that really the three reasons to watch a movie in the first place. |
