ÉSing like a hummingbird, sprout like a tree. (or something like that)
To me, ÒAliÓ provided only a superficial look into the life of the worldÕs most famous boxer. I saw the life between boxing battles, but never got a good understanding of the man behind the gloves. His transition from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali was very abrupt and left me wondering how Islam became such an important part of his life. All we were privy to was one small speech by Malcolm X. I guess these missing details are acceptable to the avid boxing fan or sports historian, but for me they left gaps that I would have liked to have filled.
My biggest complaint is that for a 2 _ hour movie, they didnÕt seem to cover very much material. Most of the time seemed to be spent getting ready for a fight, discussing a fight, or just plain fighting. ThatÕs fine and dandy, but the storyline was much more suited for a ÒRockyÓ length picture than a ÒBraveheartÓ length one.
With the Oscar nominations released today, Will Smith got the nod in the actor of the year category. Although I thought he did an excellent job, his performance doesnÕt compare to Sean PennÕs in "I Am Sam" Ð my choice for acting performance of the year. Yet, if it comes down to him or the favorite Russell Crowe, I say ÒAli, BumayeÓ. |
