“Monster’s Ball” featured strong performances by Billy Bob Thornton (Hank Grotowski) and Halle Berry (Leticia Musgrove). Until now, I never thought much of Halle as an actress, but this role opened my eyes and showed me just how good she really is.
The movie offered a powerful and disturbing look at racism. Although it was well crafted, there were a few pieces that I have yet to understand. And, no matter how well the movie was made, I have trouble believing Hank’s sudden acceptance of other races. The movie makes an effort to explain the rationale behind it, but I don’t think a lifetime of racism can be erased overnight. Then again, Halle Berry is so beautiful that she could make the leader of the Klan question his resolve.
The movie has some strong sexual scenes, so be prepared. Some people may be offended by them, others may look forward to seeing Halle Berry. For those looking forward, keep in mind that Billy Bob is also in this movie. |
