I'm beginning to think that seeing a subtitled movie somehow detracts from my overall enjoyment of it. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" had classic elements that I normally enjoy, but I had to invest my concentration on understanding the story instead of getting swept up into it. "Amelie" had the same effect on me. I have nothing against foreign language films, but having to read subtitles creates a barrier that separates me from the characters and the story. I liken it to being a translator who understands the words but does not understand the context behind the words.
Overall, "Amelie" is highly quirky and modestly amusing. Apart from the movie's levity, its most unique and appealing features are the direction and cinematography. The palette of colors that have been chosen for all aspects of the movie (clothes, props, picture, etc.) distinguish it from all other movies that you will see. |
