After staring in films like “Contact” and “Silence of the Lambs”, I figured Jodie Foster (Meg Altman) would be more selective about the movies she does – guess not! During the previews, I suspected that “Panic Room” would either be a powerful story or one filled with idiotic events that would make me shake my head is disgust. Unfortunately, this was a head shaker.
Here are just a few of the "head shakers" to amuse you, if you decide to watch this movie. I’ll be vague enough to not give anything away, but descriptive enough so you will know when they occur.
- They would have never made it to the room in the first place.
- That would have been the end of Meg's arm, and most likely her life.
- The design would have undoubtedly prevented the finger scene.
- Her husband would not have stood waiting in the doorway.
- Meg does something that the bad guys say they should have done in the beginning – they would have.
- Yeah, let’s try screaming instead of continuing with the light.
- If Meg would need to blink her eyes, the bad guys would have already heard too much.
- The sledge would have been the end of him.
- Let’s just allow everything to blow away.
...And these are off the top of my head.
Yet, with all of this, the part that annoyed me the most was that the the intruder named Burnham (Forest Whitaker) always figured out what Meg was going to do just as she was about to do it - ohhh the suspense. And, he does this despite the fact that she is behind two feet of concrete.
Maybe if you toss reality and common scense out the window, this could be a good movie. If you are an intelligent movie watcher, I'm sure you will feel the same. Overall, "Panic Room" is filled with way too many "that-would-never-happen" scenes, and I didn't enjoy watching it. |
