I'm beginning to think that 2002 will be known as "the Year of the Raunchy Comedy." First came (no pun intended but it does coincide with this lowbrow humor) the worst, "Slackers", followed by a somewhat better "40 Days and 40 Nights". I undoubtedly missed a few others during their first run, but "The Sweetest Thing", so far, is the best of the lot.
There are more than a few good laughs to be had, but there are other times that you will cringe from the extremes and crassness. Most of the comedic elements center on Cameron Diaz (Christina Walters) and Christina Applegate (Courtney Rockliffe). I guess that their dialogue is more shocking because you wouldn't expect to hear two, seemingly sweet and innoncent chicks discuss topics in a way that would make a longshoreman blush. You would think that this effect would diminish after being shocked a few times, but both Diaz and Applegate did a credible job by continuing to catch the audience off guard.
There are even a few, valuable lessons to be learned, such as the REAL reason that women go to the bathroom in groups and that the utmost care and caution must be exercised when following any written instructions from the wall of a men's room. |
