A background plotline of this Tom Clancy adaptation is the conflict between Russia and Chechnya - a contemporary conflict. Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) is a greenhorn with the CIA, and he's just beginning to date Dr. Cathy Muller (Bridget Moynahan). In Clancy's Cold War movie "The Hunt for Red October", Ryan is established with the CIA, is already married, and has a daughter named Sally. For those of you who are too young to remember, the Cold War with the Soviet Union ended long before the Russian-Chechan Conflict. It somehow bothers me that the continuity of events is broken.
Nevertheless, it still is a pretty decent movie - some action, some suspense. You don't expect to see any memorable performances in a movie like this, and of course, there aren't any. |
