Undoubtedly, the most fascinating aspect of "Minority Report" is the vision of the not-too-distant future - 2054 to be exact. Since I haven't read the short story by Philip K. Dick of which this movie is based, I have no way of knowing whether this future vision is the work of Dick, director Steven Spielberg, or a combination of the two. Of course, you've seen the trailers that depict a technology that identifies the perpetrator of a crime before it will be committed, but there are some other clever inventions that raised the corner of my mouth. For example, billy clubs have given way to more humane methods (appropriately named "sick sticks") to incapacitate difficult thugs. You've also never seen what retina scans can do for direct marketing (trust me, you'll fondly remember the age of telemarketing!)
The story is full of surprises up until the very end. Some are totally unexpected, and they will make you jump out of your seat. Some are quirky and tongue-in-cheek. They're more reminiscent of Tim Burton than Spielberg. The biggest surprise is the ending. My advice to you is to RUUUUNNNNN...to the theatre and see it for yourself. |
