How many times have we seen a movie character, in this case Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler), extemporaneously sing a song and fringe characters feel moved to join the singing? ENOUGH ALREADY!! It was clever and inventive in "My Best Friend's Wedding." Then, the copies came. With all photocopiers, the early copies are fresh and nearly as good as the original. But over time, the copies eventually degrade; the images shift; smudges, dots, and dashes appear. This latest copy in "Mr. Deeds" is in the latter stages of degradation. It's no longer clever or inventive. Sandler can't even make it cute anymore. It just seems FORCED! It doesn't even work on an ironic level if that was the intent.
This scene is indicative of the numerous, wicked stupid scenes. The comedy isn't, at all, good, but Sandler is the best choice to play an underdog, a lovable loser. Sure, ALL his roles are like this, but he's the best at this. Arguably, it could be his worst movie, but I still find a reason to appreciate his talents. |
