The main characters are very well acted - especially Annie Wilson by Cate Blanchett. She always delivers an exemplary performance. However, I'm most surprised by Keanu Reeves (Donnie Barksdale). The lack of feeling and warmth in his monotone voice was the perfect choice for the wife-beating, redneck "Christian." Hillary Swank (Valerie Barksdale) and Giovanni Ribisi (Buddy Cole) also deserve mention for their supporting roles.
The main theme - psychic abilities - interests me greatly, but I found its utility in the movie to be highly uninteresting. The brutal subject matter is also a major turnoff for me. Unfortunately, these two factors distract from the fine performances. |
