I wasn't sure what to expect from M. Night Shyamalan's latest movie... his last one "Unbreakable" did not stand up to his first film "The Sixth Sense" - so I figured it was a 50/50 chance that this could either be great or horrible... lucky for me it was the former!!!
M. Night Shyamalan has a real knack of picking child actors to support the big named stars. Little Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin (as talented as his older siblings) are wonderful as Mel Gibson's children. Joaquin Phoenix (of Gladiator fame) was excellent as Mel's younger brother.
As for the story line - sure it's a little far fetched - revolving around crop circles in rural Bucks County, PA, but isn't that the purpose of sci-fi movies? Of course, in some spots it was a little hokey - but for the most part, I have to admit that I was sitting on the edge of my seat, grabbing my husband's arm! I loved it! My heart was racing!
I thought the cinematography was cool - the sweeping scenes from the corn fields, the dark, intense scenes from inside the house, etc. There just wasn't much of this movie that I didn't like.
If you have an imagination and aren't as narrow minded, critical or as synical as some of my co-reviewers (Doug) - i suggest you take a trip to your local theater and check this one out! |
