In this movie, Billy Bob Thorton is every bit as good as Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man" or Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump". When you see an interview with Billy Bob today, he sounds and acts like a complete idiot. It is amazing to think that he is the same person that is responsible for putting this movie together.
"Sling Blade" is a story about Karl Childers (Billy Bob Thorton) who is released from a mental institution where he spent most of his life for killing his mother and her lover with a sling blade. After his release, he is alone to face the outside world when he meets a young boy named Frank Wheatley with whom he becomes good friends. Through his friendship with Frank, we are able to see that Karl is a good man with a gentle heart.
I know the plot does not sound very exciting (I don't want to give too much of it away), but this movie is really fantastic and it deserved the Oscar it received in 1996. I highly recommend you watch it, but you should probably do so before Billy Bob gets any more frightening in real life. |
