I thought Part 2 of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was every bit as good as Part 1. So why, you may ask, would I give it a lower rating? If you are a big fan of LOTR, and you read all of the novels, then you will have a special appreciation for the story. If you are like me, a fan of quality movies, with little desire to read the stories, then you may start to feel a twinge of frustration. After the first installment of the trilogy, I felt a let down as I left the theatre with a feeling of emptiness. The movie started a story, but stopped in the middle. This took me by surprise since I never saw movie that left the audience with no resolution about anything. At the end of Part 2, I left thinking I am in exactly the same place as I was after the first one.
I thought the movie was well made, well acted, and entertaining, but unnecessary. I think you could watch Part 1 to learn how the story begins, and wait for Part 3 to learn how it ends, and skip Part 2 without missing anything important. The one thing Part 2 did accomplish was to guarantee that every person in the theatre will be back next December to figure out how it all comes together. Otherwise, you wasted 3 hours of your life for no good reason. |
