This film was nothing like I thought it would be. For some reason, when I saw the trailer, I pictured this as a comedy of sorts. Well, I definitely wouldn't classify it in the comedy genre. I found it a very sad tale. However, for some twisted reason I like sad tales and hence the "8" rating for this fine film.
Jack Nicholson plays Warren Schmidt, recently retired and recently a widower. The majority of Schmidt's tale is told on the road as he's driving to his daughter's wedding. Most of it told in letters to his "foster child" in a third world country (ala - Sally Strothers). Plenty of amusing things happen on his journey - including a naked Kathy Bates (that one's for you Doug!) However, in the end, you leave feeling very sad for this man. It was an extrodinary role fo Nicholson and once you see this movie you will understand why he has the nomination for the Oscars. |
