The Quiet American was a movie about Vietnam during their rebellion against France in the early 1950s. But it was more than just about the conflict. It was about love and what people will do to in order to keep that love.
Michael Caine was wonderful as the English journalist, Thomas Fowler, who is in love with a taxi dancer named Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen). Then Fowler meets Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser)who is supposedly over in vietnam as a doctor. Fowler befriends him until Pyle becomes interested in Phuong.
The story is intertwined with Pyle's secret life as well as the events of the era.
I can definitely see why Michael Caine was given an Oscar nomination. It was one of his best performances.
I also know why i've become more interested in seeing independent films instead of the normal blockbusters... after seeing this one - you may too! |
