The band New Radicals have a song with the lyrics "we've got the dreamer's disease." What exactly is "dreamer's disease?" Is it something you get from sleeping in late on weekends? Man, I hope not... Actually, I think it's the only disease that more of us wish we had. A disease that allows us to imagine what's possible, and never be satisfied with less. A state of mind that helps us remember things the way they should have been. The way they would have been if everything was perfect. In Big Fish, Ed Bloom had dreamer's disease. A disease he spread to everyone through stories of his life's big adventures. Big stories. One bigger than the next. And, everyone loved them. Everyone, except the son who struggled to understand his father's "illness." Many self-help books tell you that "happiness is a state of mind." If that's the case, then maybe "Dreamer's disease" is one of the steps in achieving the goal.
Big Fish is an exceptionally original movie in a time where sequels and remakes are filling the screen. The perfect ending capped an already enjoyable film to ensure the story will be around for years to come. |
