Even though the Midtown Cinema is one of my favorite places to go to see a movie - I always know that whatever I see will not be a "feel good" movie! But then again name me one Indie film in the past year that has been feel good? 21 Grams is no exception.
Not to say that I wasn't completely drawn into the story and the characters. I found it to be a very powerful movie, with all sorts of plots that finally tie together at the end. Was it a totally original film? If you ask my fellow reviewer, Doug, he will say that it had hints of "Memento" in it. And I would tend to agree. But the story itself was unique and the acting, I felt, was superb.
A lot of "Oscar spin" has been placed on the performance of Sean Penn, but I must admit that I thought Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro were equally, if not more impressive in their roles. I still think Sean Penn was robbed for the Oscar with his performance in "I Am Sam". To me, that was a superior role to this one. By I digress.
21 Grams is a dark film with a moving story. If you enjoy movies for more than just "entertainment" value, and enjoy a good movie for content and purpose, then I recommend 21 Grams. |
